Support Beam
Mold Question and Answer
Q.
Mold on our vigas (southwest round beam). I would like to know if this
type of mold is harmful and active? Attached are photos of the mold.
A.
Because of its bluish-green unique color, the mold growing on your
home's support beams is likely to be Penicillium mold, the third most
dangerous indoor mold. Only mold lab analysis can confirm the
Penicillium species for sure. Any mold in elevated levels indoors can
cause severe health problems according to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. Your photo's depict very advanced mold growth which
will be continually throwing into the air large numbers of airborne
mold spores which will travel in air currents to mold cross
contaminate your entire house and its heating/cooling system. You
should mold test both the visible mold growth and the air of each
room, basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and the outward air flow
from each heating/cooling duct register for the possible presence of
elevated levels of airborne mold spores, in comparison to an outdoor
mold control test. Read the
