Hot Tub Spa Mold
Problems
Q. I have a
friend who has a hot tub and she has been noticing some flu like symptoms
could it be from mold in the hot tub? She keeps the cleaning up to date
like she should , however it seems like when she is around it her symptoms
worsen. She has noticed that some of her friends and family have showed
signs after being around or in the hot tub which really makes her
concerned. Her symptoms are fatigue, aching , coughing, touble breathing,
skin rash, and just all around not feeling good. She has also noticed that
she will feel fine outside but the minute she walks into the hot tub room
she feels the symptoms. Please email back as soon as you get this please,
so I can let her know. [Nov. 22, 2004]
A. It is common for hot tubs and spas to have leaks underneath,
enabling massive mold growth to remain hidden beneath the hot tub. In
addition, having large amounts of water standing in a hot tub or spa means
very high humidity which can cause visible and hidden mold growth in the
walls, floor, ceiling, and heating/cooling system of the hot tub room and
of adjacent areas. The first step would be to carefully inspect beneath
the hot tub for mold growth [if accessible], and to mold test the air
beneath the hot tub, the hot tub room itself, all rooms of the house, the
air of the attic/basement/crawl space/garage, and the outward air flow
from each heating/cooling duct register for the possible presence of
elevated levels of airborne mold spores in comparison to an outdoor mold
control test.
You can use do it yourself mold test kits, available at a
large hardware, home improvement, or safety store.
